Smithers Saltos History
About & History
Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club operates as part of the Northern Edge Sport Association, a community-based, non-profit organization committed to providing high-quality sport, recreation, and physical activity opportunities in Northern British Columbia.
Our Roots
The gymnastics program began in 1970, founded by Paul and Esma Challen at Telkwa Elementary School under the name The 54th Reps Gymnastics Club, referencing School District 54. From its earliest days, the program was built on community involvement, volunteer leadership, and a passion for athlete development.
In 1987, the organization was formally established as the Bulkley Valley Gymnastics Association (BVGA), continuing to grow as a volunteer-run non-profit serving families across the Bulkley Valley.
Growth in Smithers
During the 1980s, the club relocated from the Fall Fair Grounds to the nearby town of Smithers, securing a permanent facility in what was formerly a municipal public works garage. This transition marked a significant step forward, allowing for expanded programming, improved training space, and long-term sustainability.
Today, this facility remains home to our gymnastics programs and continues to evolve as part of Northern Edge Sport Association’s broader vision for accessible, community-driven sport and recreation.
Gymnastics Programs
Through Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club, Northern Edge Sport Association delivers year-round gymnastics programming, including:
Recreational classes for toddlers, children, and teens
Competitive training pathways for athletes of all genders and skill levels
Camps, birthday parties, and special events
Our recreational program serves approximately 80 to 150+ athletes per session, offering fun, fitness, skill development, and affordable activity options for families in the region.
Our competitive program supports 50 to 100 athletes annually, with participants training and competing across British Columbia. The club also hosts an annual competition, traditionally held in April, welcoming clubs from across Northwestern BC.
Coaching & Community Leadership
All instructors within the gymnastics program are NCCP certified, and many are current or former Smithers Saltos athletes who progressed through the club themselves. This long-standing connection fosters a strong culture of mentorship, leadership, and continuity.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the success of the organization, contributing through volunteering, fundraising, and participation on the Board of Directors. This collaborative approach ensures programs remain responsive to community needs and values.
Our Philosophy
Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club reflects Northern Edge Sport Association’s core belief that sport should be inclusive, positive, and accessible. We strive to create an environment where athletes of all ages and abilities can build physical literacy, confidence, independence, and a lifelong enjoyment of movement.
Whether participating recreationally or competitively, athletes are supported in a safe, welcoming space that emphasizes personal growth, teamwork, and fun.
